Members of Parliament (MP) during Zero Hour in the Rajya Sabha on Friday have demanded hike in wages and allowances given to them and suggested the remuneration should be higher than revised scale of a cabinet secretary.
Samajwadi Party (SP) MP Ram Gopal Yadav said that after implementation of 7th Pay Commission wages of MPs will be less than a PA in the government.
The SP MP further added that an MPs salary is less than that of a Delhi MLA, 1/3 of Telangana MLA and not even half of Maharashtra salary.
“The demand is legitimate as inflation rate has soared up. A salary of a MP should be higher than that of a cabinet secretary,” said Yadav. He added a cabinet secretary earnsRs2.5lakhs/month after the implementation of 7th pay commission.
Congress MP Anand Sharma backing Yadav’s demand said, “This is the first time that a government is not responding to Parliamentary Committee recommendation which has been discussed and unanimously approved.”
Another Congress MP Hussain Dalwai said that the government is spending crores in foreign tours but ear to the demands of hike on salary and allowances is not being given.
The SP MP had demanded early implementation of revision of a MPs’ salary by the Parliamentary Committee.
The Parliamentary Committee is reported to have recommended doubling the salary and allowances of the MPs to Rs2.8lakhs/month.
