Revenge porn hits Australia like a virus

A survey has revealed that instances of Revenge Porn have been occurring in Australia on a mass scale. The survey study was government-funded and it involved taking inputs from more than 4,200 people in Australia. The study revealed that one in five Australians have experienced incidents related to revenge porn, wherein their intimate photographs were taken without their approval. This was usually followed by threats that their photos/videos would be uploaded on social media platforms, accessible in the public domain. The researchers involved in the study have requested the government to make tougher laws that would help prevent cases of revenge porn.

The study also shows that men and women were equally susceptible to revenge porn. 50% of those interviewed from minority groups such as Aboriginal Australians and people with disabilities reported to have experienced some form of abuse. In the category of lesbian, gay or bisexual people, almost one-third of them had experienced abuse resulting from revenge porn. Researchers said that existing laws are yet to catch up with cases involving revenge porn and there’s an urgent need to draft new laws, specifically targeted at curbing revenge porn.

“Our survey only captured those victims who had become aware their images had been distributed, whereas some victims may never discover that their images have been taken and distributed,” Monash senior criminology lecturer Asher Flynn said.
