In a development that can spark communal tension in Bihar, a Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) Minhaj Khan was shot dead in north Bihar’s Siwan district today. The incident happened when Khan was asleep in his house, which is located in Sheikhpura village in Basantpur police station area, around 158 km north of Patna. Unidentified gunmen are said to have opened fire on Khan, which led to his death. His death has increased the possibility of communal and political tension, since Khan was a prominent RJD leader. He was the district general secretary of the RJD Yuva Morcha and is said to be close to criminal-turned politician Mohammad Shahabudin. It may be recalled that Mohammad Shahabudin is a Siwan strongman and he has been convicted in several criminal cases.
As per information provided by the victim’s family members, the killing has most likely been orchestrated by another criminal named Raju Khan. Soon after Minhaj Khan was killed, a large crowd gathered at his house, which increased the possibility of violence. Police forces in the area have been alerted and several of them are currently camping in the village to take care of any violent situation. As of now, the situation is under control. According to initial investigations conducted by the police, a country-made carbine and five live bombs have been recovered near the victim’s house. It appears that the killing may have been a result of personal enmity.
