Authorities have been left baffled after the recently installed gold plated mast at Kerala’s famous Lord Ayyappa Temple in Sabarimala was found damaged. Although three people have been arrested for damaging the golden mast, no one is really sure why anyone would try to damage the mast. If there was an attempt to steal anything, then it would have been understandable, but just trying to damage something seems very mysterious. It may be recalled that the temple attracts millions of devotees from across the country every year. Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that top police officials and forensic experts have been rushed to the temple to investigate the matter.
Initial investigations have revealed that the chemical used to damage the mast is likely to be mercury. The CCTV footage has revealed some people spraying something on the mast, which is likely to be mercury. The temple guards have detailed 3 people based on the visuals provided by the CCTV footage. These suspects have been handed over to the police. Responding to the development, state Devaswom Minister Kadakampally Surendran said that the incident is very mysterious. Authorities are currently working to find the real motive for the chemical attack.
