Sabarimala which is thronged by millions of devotees every year during Onam, Karthigai Deepam and Makara Jyothi is all set to get its own airport. The temple shrine which is known for its strict rues with regards to not allowing women from the age group of 10-50 at the present moment can be reached via train and bus. There was no air route, atleast closer to the shrine.
The Kerala Government has announced that it has identified a place where the proposed Green Airport would be constructed. The property in question is the 2,263-acre Cheruvally estate of the Harrison Plantations – is just 48 km from the hill shrine (which is very closer to Erumely from where the Pilgrims going on Periya Padhai would start walking towards the Shrine).
The closest airport prior to this was Kochi and the shrine is located some 150 kms away from it and with the new airport, the distance to travel will be reduced to by 2/3rd. The place is closer to two National Highways. The tender for setting up the airport was floated in February this year and ended up with three projects being identified for the same.
The Sabarimala temple is situated on the Western Ghats in Kerala’s Pathanamthitta district
