When a statement from Samajwadi Party proclaimed their long time spokesperson, Shivpal Singh Yadav as the new party in-charge it was not an unexpected change of guard. Political analysts have been anticipating a change in the Samajwadi Party dynamics ever since their 2014 Lok Sabha election’s debacle.
Shivpal Singh Yadav, the younger brother of Samajwadi Party’s national President Mulayam Singh Yadav has been a key figure and held posts such as General Secretary and State President in the past. The party has also won many elections under his supervision. The appointment of new party in-charge does not take away any powers that Akhilesh Yadav, present president, is enjoying. This step would ensure that Akhilesh Yadav can completely concentrate on duties of running the government in Uttar Pradesh.
The announcement just reinforces what Shivpal Singh Yadav has been doing for his party all along. It was Shivpal who announced the party’s list of 142 candidates for 2017 assembly elections. Neither Mulayam Singh nor Akhilesh Yadav was present to announce the first list of candidates, which is held very important for the party.
“These are all family matters in the party where only four family members take all the important decisions. The decision looks like a division of labour in the family. Shivpal Yadav is taking centre stage in the 2017 elections. The post he has been given is not a constitutional position in the party. The constitutional powers vests in the state president,” commented a Samajwadi Party member.
With the capable leadership of veteran leader Shivpal Singh Yadav, Samajwadi Party are looking to beat the advances of other parties prior to the Assembly polls. Whether this decision will bear fruits, only time will tell.
