Sanghamitra Maurya

Sanghamitra Maurya is an Indian politician and a Member of Parliament (MP) from the Lok Sabha constituency of Badaun in the state of Uttar Pradesh. She is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Sanghamitra came to prominence in 2019 general election, wherein she defeated her nearest rival Dharmendra Yadav of Samajwadi Party (SP) by a margin of more than 18k votes. It was a close contest, as parties like SP and Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP) had fought the elections together under an alliance called ‘mahagathbandhan’.

With her win, Sanghamitra ended the supremacy of Samajwadi Party in Badaun. As may be recalled, Samajwadi Party had retained this Lok Sabha seat from 1996 to 2014. Badaun Lok Sabha seat comprises assembly constituencies of Gunnaur, Bisauli, Sahaswan, Bilsi and Badaun.

Prior to her win in 2019, Sanghamitra had contested the general elections in 2014 from Mainpuri. She had contested on BSP ticket and had come third in the election. It is to note that Mainpuri is another bastion of Samajwadi Party. It has retained this seat from 1996 to 2019.

Early Life and Education

Sanghamitra Maurya was born on January 03, 1985 to Shri Swami Prasad Maurya and Smt. Shiva Maurya. She was born in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh. She is a doctor (MBBS) by profession and had studied at Era Medical College, Lucknow.

Political Career

Sanghamitra Maurya gained experience in politics at an early age. She was born in a family with political background. Her father is currently an MLA and a member of BJP. He had joined BJP after spending several years with BSP. Her family’s political background helped Sanghamitra to emerge as a successful politician.

  • 31 July 2019 onwards: Member, Committee on Welfare of Other Backward Classes
  • 13 Sept. 2019 onwards: Member, Standing Committee on Health and Family Welfare; Member, Consultative Committee, Ministry of Rural Development, Ministry of Panchayati Raj.

Personal Pursuits

One of the favorite activities for Sanghamitra is reading and writing. She has written a number of articles on a variety of topics, which have been published in various magazines and journals. Her writing skill is known for its ability to bring out facts and make them meaningful for readers. Sanghamitra has also written books such as Modism Ke Mayne and Buddhism Ki Baatein.

Sanghamitra has been deeply inspired by the teachings of Buddhism. It was the reason why she converted from Hinduism to Buddhism. Sanghamitra also has interest in social and cultural activities and travelling. In sports, she likes ludo and badminton.
