AIADMK Gen Secretary VK Sasikala who is lodged in parpanna agrahara jail in Bengaluru has filed for a review petition in the Supreme Court where in she has mentioned that she cannot be convicted on a disproportionate assets case.
She is behind the bars serving the sentence of 4 years handed over to her by the Supreme Court couple of months back. On her review petition, she has mentioned that she could not be convicted because she is not a public servant.
She was handed the imprisonment after the Supreme Court found and convinced that she has accumulated Rs.60 crore worth of assets disproportionate to the income along with her friend, former CM , late Jayalalithaa. As per the law, a convict who serves the sentence for more than 6 months cannot contest in the elections for 6 years after the punishment period gets over.
She made her niece TTV Dinakaran, Deputy General Secretary before she went to the prison who is also lodged in jail for election commission bribery case. The present CM – Edapaddi K Palanisamy has agreed to keep Sasikala and Dnakaran out of the party politics to persuade O Paneerselvam to join the party.
She contended that the of corruption law did not apply to her since proceedings against Jayalalithaa had ended due to her death. In the past, Supreme Court has rarely accepted the review petition and reversed the order. This time, we would have to wait and see as to what the outcome is.
