The Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI), Justice J S Khehar, has directed the State Government of Kerala to distibute Rs 500 crores as compensation to the victims of Endosulfan pesticide poisoning within 3 months.
Endosulfan pesticide poisoning has caused a lot of physical problems for the victims. It has caused health deformities, health complications and even deaths of the victims of Endosulfan poisoning. The bench also asked, the Kerala Government to set up a medical centre to provide lifeling medical care to all the victims of poisoning.
The Centre and the State Governments were not willing to stop the use of Endosulfan, due to its effectiveness in killing pests, but were forced to do so when the Supreme Court ordered it in 2012. A SC appointed high powered committee had come to the conclusion that over 13.35% of all recognized pesticides, including Endosulfan, posed a lot of health risks. The risks could range from negative impact to the reproductive system and could go upto being congenital deformities.
