Seven US Navy sailors are reported to be missing, after a navy destroyer collided with a container ship. The collision was so powerful that it crushed an entire section of the navy destroyer. To search the missing personnel, a joint operation has been launched by the US and Japan. Several planes, boats and helicopters are currently carrying out massive searches in Japan’s Pacific coast to find the missing sailors. The Captain of the USS Fitzgerald navy destroyer was also injured in the accident. It is not yet clear where the missing sailors where at the time of the collision. Other members of the destroyer were also injured and had to be airlifted to a hospital.
The collision occurred between the Fitzgerald and Philippine-flagged container ship ACX Crystal at around 2:30 am when it was quite dark outside. The site of the collision lies off the coast of the Izu peninsula, southwest of Tokyo. The area is a major shipping route used by ships to enter the ports in Yokohama and Tokyo. “The USS Fitzgerald suffered damage on her starboard side above and below the waterline. The collision resulted in some flooding,” the US Navy said.
