Followers of Dera Sacha Sauda Chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh went on rampage after the spiritual leader was convicted in a rape case by a special CBI court. The court announced its judgment in Panchkula today. Soon after Singh was convicted in the rape case, his followers got enraged and started rampaging offices and buildings in the area. Several buses and other vehicles have also been burned by the mob. The mob was so blinded that it did not even spare media vehicles. Some journalists were also attacked and injured during the mob fury. The violence started at Panchkula and now it is fast spreading to other parts of India such as Haryana, Punjab, Delhi and even Rajasthan. In response to the violent protests, the security forces had to resort to tear gas shells to disperse the protestors. Several police vehicles have also been burnt during the violent protests. The administration has imposed curfew in Punjab’s Bhatinda, Mansa, Ferozepur, Muktsar, Malout and Budhlada.
During the violence, at least 12 people are said to have been killed and more than 100 people have been injured. Authorities were expecting such violence since the followers of the spiritual leader were coming to Panchkula in large numbers. It’s very sad to see that people are willing to risk their lives in defending someone who has been convicted of rape. This is not the first time that a spiritual leader has been convicted and sent to jail. Earlier also, many such incidents have taken place, creating law and order problems for the administration.
