Duration: 2 hours 15 minutes

Recently, there’s been an increased focus on showcasing stories of small towns and cities and many of these have turned out to be hugely profitable for moviemakers. We have seen it with movies like Badrinath Ki Dulhaniya, Bareilly Ki Barfi, Newton, etc., and the latest addition is Shaadi Mein Zaroor Aana. These movies did not have any superstars and yet these were hugely successful. This in turn poses the question whether the tribe of superstars has become an endangered specifies, especially considering peoples’ evolved taste that favors good stories rather than the razzmatazz of superstars. Shaadi Mein Zaroor Aana appears to be inspired by Jane Austen’s Persuasion, but similarities only exist in the core theme where the subject of being wronged in love is explored in great detail.

The movie follows the life of Satyendra (Rajkummar Rao) and Aarti Shukla (Kriti Kharbanda), who are getting ready for their arranged marriage. During their preliminary meetings prior to marriage, they come to like each other and develop good relations. Satyendra has a government job and the marriage is supposed to be a perfect wedding for both the bride and the groom. However, just on the day of the marriage, Aarti changes her mind and runs away. Being an ambitious girl, Aarti decides to junk the wedding and runs away. This leaves Satyendra fuming in anger and he experiences heartbreak and societal humiliation. That one day changes Satyendra into something very different. After many years, fate brings them face to face again, and what was once a love story, transforms into a tale of war.

The movie highlights various issues currently plaguing the society such as bribe, dowry, gender bias, etc. It is also a dramatic mix of all the various emotions such as jealously, passion, regret, revenge, divine love, etc. The movie is held strongly in place by the superior performance of ace actor Rajkummar Rao. After delivering so many hits, it appears that Rao has the proverbial Midas touch that turns everything into gold. Rao is ably supported by Kriti Kharbanda, who wins the audience with her innate charm and simplicity.

If you are not already a Rajkummar Rao fan, this movie might help you decide. The simmering tension between the two main characters of the movie is definitely worth exploring.
