After Nawaz Sharif was disqualified by the Pakistan Supreme Court, the ruling Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) has chosen Shahid Khaqan Abbasi to work as the interim Prime Minister of Pakistan. Abbasi is currently the Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources in Pakistan. The decision was taken during an informal party meeting headed by former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. Abbasi will function as the interim Prime Minister of Pakistan for 45 days, in which time, the party would be able to find a permanent solution to the leadership vacuum in the country. The party also said that brother of Nawaz Sharif and current Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif will now be contesting elections in order to find a place in the country’s National Assembly. It is likely that Shehbaz Sharif would be appointed the next prime minister of Pakistan, after the end of 45 days.
Earlier, there were speculations that former defense minister Khawaja Muhamamd Asif would be appointed as the interim prime minister of Pakistan. However, now a decision has been taken in favor of Abbasi. Nawaz Sharif was disqualified for life yesterday after a unanimous decision by the bench of Pakistan Supreme Court. Following his disqualification, Sharif resigned from the post of Prime Minister.
