Maria Sharapova who was handed a doping ban will be seen in US Open after a gap of 18 months from her professional slam appearance. She has been given a wild card said the tournament organisers. Maria has been helming at No.1 for a brief period and was better known for her style which has made her the most sought out player among various brands which saw her on top earning sports personalities each year.
Even though she made her comeback much earlier, she was denied wildcard entry in the French Open and did not participate in her favourite Wimbledon due to thigh injury. Sharapova has won the US Open in 2005 and has added five grand slams to her career. She was unaware when she was tested positive for the drug meldonium in 2016 which got added to the banned drugs items list only in January the very same year.
Sharapova is currently placed at World No 148 and she did not take part in Cincinnati Open and Rogers Cup since she did not want to fall a prey to injury which would have ruled out her US Open appearance. Other wild card entrants includes Taylor Townsend, Kayla Day, Sofia Kenin, Ashley Kratzer, Brienne Minor and Amandine Hesse.
The US Open is one of the prestigious tournament which has the prize money of USD3.7 Million.
