After hearing a contempt plea, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has issued a notice to spiritual guru Shri Shri Ravi Shankar. In the plea, it has been mentioned that Ravi Shankar’s Art of Living (AOL) has wrongly accused the NGT and central government for the damage caused to Yamuna floodplains. While it is true that the NGT and center had approved the cultural event organized by AOL, it was up to AOL to ensure that the damage was minimal and also to ensure that adequate compensation was given to restore the Yamuna floodplains. The matter will come up for hearing on Friday and it will be taken up by a bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Swatanter Kumar.
The plea was filed by a man named Manoj Misra, who is a Yamuna activist. In his plea, Misra has stated that action should be taken against Ravi Shankar. It has also been mentioned that Ravi Shankar’s statement acted as a roadblock in the free and fair dispensation of justice. However, the legal representative for AOL said that the organization has not received any such notice. He said that the matter has simply been adjourned till May 9.
The entire issue cropped up after Ravi Shankar posted on Facebook that the NGT and central government were responsible for the damage caused to Yamuna floodplains since they were the ones who had provided the approval to the cultural event.
