Shurhozelie Liezietsu has been elected as the new chief minister of Nagaland state after TR Zeliang resigned. The political crisis may end with the this development in the state. The Democratic Alliance of Nagaland (DAN) Legislature Party elected veteran leader and party president Shurhozelie Liezietsu as its new leader in place of TR Zeliang.
He will be sworn in as chief minister on Wednesday.
There were speculations about the return of former chief minister Neiphiu Rio to state but this development has ended such speculations.
T R Zeliang resigned after the state government planned to hold municipal elections with 33 per cent reservation for women. Many tribal groups opposed the civic elections and Zeliang had to bow down to the criticism.
Born on November 20, 1936, Shurhozelie Liezietsu has been an eminent scholar, author as well as a linguist. He has redefined school system in Nagaland by introducing an entire new set of textbooks. Liezietsu is also known for introducing new system of school building across the state.
