Almost all of us would have been receiving SMS from our respective telecom providers asking us to visit the nearest store to ink our Aadhaar to the number and not many would have even bothered to visit. It is however not gone well with the Government which has announced that the numbers which are not linked with Aadhaar would cease to work from Feb 2018.
Aadhaar mobile linkage is being done as per the orders of Supreme Court passed in February this year in Lokniti foundation case which means the deadline set up by default is Feb 2018 unless Govt has agreed to extend it. All the unlinked phones will be deactivated post this to ensure that no criminals, fraudsters or terrorists will use the SIMs issued to then which until last year was distributed to one and all.
The sources said that biometrics cannot be stored by the mobile operators nor they have access to any of the other personal data. The so called biometricswhich i collected should be encrypted by telecom company and sent to UIDAI at that moment itself and any storage of biometric by a service provider is a criminal offence punishable with up to three years of imprisonment under the Aadhaar Act 2016. This ensures that the data is safe and not misused. However a regular check is required.
The Central government had told the Supreme Court in February that it would put in place, within a year, an effective mechanism for the verification of pre-paid mobile users who constitute 90 per cent of the total subscribers. Do not wait until the last moment and get stuck in rush. Hurry up today and get your SIMs linked.
