Six stone pelters were killed and several others were injured when security forces opened fire on a rampaging mob that was trying to stall proceedings at a polling booth in Budgam district. Reports indicate that a crowd of over 100 people had stormed a polling station at Pakherpora in Chrar-e-Sharief area of Budgam district. In an effort to control them, the security forces first fired warning shots to disperse the violent crowd. However, it did not have any impact on them and they continued damaging parts of the building where the polling was being conducted.
As the situation was getting completely out of control, the security forces were left with no other option, but to fire at the stone pelters. Security forces were not provided with pallet guns, so they had to use live rounds. In the firing, several stone pelters got injured and 6 of them succumbed to their injuries. Reports of violence have also been coming in from other areas such as Badran in Budgam, Charesharif, Nasrullahpora, Chadoora and Zainakot. Till 3 PM, the voter turnout was a mere 5.84 percent.
