With the telecom sector experiencing cut-throat competition, telecom companies are doing everything they can to grab the customers of Reliance Communications (RCom). It may be recalled that RCom had announced that it will be shutting down its 2G telecom business and its current customers will have the option to move to another service provider or switch to RCom’s 4G services. After the announcement, companies like Airtel and Vodafone are making intense efforts to get the customers of RCom. Everything from advertisements to new phone plans are being offered to lure the customers of RCom. Airtel has already published advertisements in leading newspapers and Vodafone is offering a discounted plan.
Vodafone’s plan for RCom customers will provide unlimited local and STD calls, free national roaming (outgoing and incoming), and 1GB data per day for the first recharge of Rs 496 for 84 days. The plan is targeted at people who use a lot of data and travel often. There are lots of new subscribers to be made since 60 percent of RCom’s customers use 2G services. Experts said that much of Anil Ambani run RCom’s woes have been due to the dirt-cheap phone plans announced by Reliance Jio, which is run by elder brother Mukesh Ambani. RCom currently has a huge debt of around Rs 44,000 crore, which is proving to be a heavy load for the company. It remains to be seen if Reliance communications would be able to do any better after closing its 2G business.
