A day after Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi compared Prime Minister Narendra Modi with Adolf Hitler, Union Minister Smriti Irani responded today in equal measure saying that there are no prizes for guessing who was inspired by Hitler and imposed the Emergency in 1975. Irani was referring to Rahul Gandhi’s grandmother Indira Gandhi who had imposed Emergency in India, which was a 21-month period from 1975 to 1977. The Emergency in India was considered as one of the darkest periods in Indian politics, as human rights were severely curtailed across the country. The Emergency in India had allowed complete power to the Prime Minister and elections were suspended.
At the time of the Emergency, most political opponents of Gandhi were put in jail. The freedom of press was also curtailed significantly. Responding to Rahul Gandhi’s comments, Irani also said that Congress should worry about its own future rather than worrying about the country’s future, which is already witnessing rapid growth and development. “@OfficeOfRG u r 42 yrs late on this 1. No prizes for guessing who was inspired by Hitler, imposed the Emergency & trampled over democracy (sic),” Irani said in a tweet.
