Relationship between Sleep and Life Expectancy
Can our sleeping habits be effecting the years of our life? Can too much or too little sleep be silently increasing the risk of your untimely death. Researchers have concluded in their studies that this could be a result of the impact of sleep on the overall health either in its own form or due the other diseases the impact both life expectancy ad sleep duration.
Missing sleep over time makes our immune system weak which makes it difficult for the body to fight off the viruses and the diseases. This also effects the healing capacity of the body. Sleep deprivation has been believed to slow down the recovery time after the sickness and also increase the chances of getting sick after being exposed to the virus. Our body releases a protein called Cytokines during the sleep which helps our body fight against the infections. The body starts releasing more such proteins when we are sick. Sleep deprivation decreases the production of these proteins which effects the immunity system of the person suffering.
Statistics have shown that people who do not get proper sleep not only feel tired during the day but they also lack concentration and have increased risk for obesity, congestive heart failure, diabetes and other such life threatening conditions.
What causes the link?
Not only is sleep deprivation a cause of such diseases but it may be a result of those diseases nonetheless. The risk factor in such cases is increased. For instance, a person suffering from sleep deprivation might have developed a heart disease, now with the heart disease, his sleep patterns would be effected even more and his body would become more non receptive to the treatments. This condition would increase the risk of having a stroke and change the condition into a life threatening disease.
According to a European study, people who regularly get less than six hours of sleep every night are 12% more likely to die earlier than those who get six to eight hours of sleep daily. The studies have made it clear that it is not the lack of sleep but the medical conditions that are a result of the lack of sleep, which puts the life of the person suffering in danger.
Getting enough sleep and being well rested can improve the overall health of the person which infact boosts his life expectancy. It helps protect you from having any negative effects on the immune and nervous system and prevent you from any cardiovascular or endocrine malfunction.
There are several conditions that lead to the condition of not getting a proper sleep at night. While the most of them might be a result of an external factor like the temperature of the room, or the mattress or the noise from outside the window, it is the internal causes that are of major concern.
To remove the external causes, you can take the help of aroma oils, try to dim the light before you lie down, close the windows so that there is no outside noise, find the most comfortable mattresses for and try to be calm. This will help you get positive energy before bed and let you sleep peacefully for a longer period. Another thing that can help you maintain your proper sleep is to follow the routine, even on the weekends. This way our body becomes used to the sleep time and remains asleep for the sound period.
People who have difficulty sleeping at night must avoid taking naps during the day. Power naps are a good way to keep your body boosted up during the day but that makes sleeping at night even more difficult for them.
As for the internal disturbances, people suffering from snoring are one such example. Snoring and sleep apnea are directly related. The person suffers from dry mouth, breathing condition which does not allow him to rest peacefully even during the night. Snoring and sleep apnea go hand in hand and might be one of the leading causes of sleep deprivation caused diseases.
However, both snoring and sleep apnea can be treated by consulting the doctor, who might suggest CPAP or oral treatments. But whatever they suggest, the condition has to be cured before sleep deprivation causes more medical conditions for you.
