Solar Eclipse 2017: India time, why Hindus avoid eating food

A total solar eclipse will take place today, 21 August, all over North America.

The solar eclipse will start around 1 p.m EDT (which is around 10.30 pm IST)

A solar eclipse is when the moon completely covers the sun, but this one is special because it is taking place across the entire United States, and thus people will actually be able to view this.

In India, the eclipse is estimated to last between 9.15pm to 2.34 am.

Since the eclipse will occur during the night hours in India, experts believe it not to have any significant astrological impact.

As NASA points out, people should not look directly at the sun’s ray during the course of the celestial event and also advised to use special eclipse glasses .

As per Hindu mythology the period for which the eclipse lasts is believed to see an increase in harmful agents, bacteria and germs as a result of the absence of Sun rays and light.

In Hindu mythology a solar eclipse is seen as the engulfing of life giving, energy providing Sun by an evil force; it is therefore seen as an omen.

The period for which the eclipse lasts is believed to see an increase in harmful agents, bacteria and germs as a result of the absence of Sun rays and light.

This is why many avoid eating food during an eclipse.
