A very dismal voter turnout of 7.14% was reported in the Srinagar by-polls on Sunday due to rampaging mobs clashes, resulting in the death of about eight civilians and many left injured.
Many groups who had boycotted the by-polls led the violence and set ablaze a polling station.
Srinagar, Budgam and Ganderbal districts that straddles the Lok Sabha constituency had the worst impact of such violence and voter turnout was very dismal.
Separatists had earlier called for a poll boycott. The Election Commission had revised up the voter turnout to 7.14% in the Sunday evening. The Srinagar constituency has 12.61 lakh registered voters.
In 2014 general elections, this seat had recorded 26 percent polling. In 1999, the seat had 11.93% voter turnout. This time former chief minister and National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah is in contest with PDP’s Nazir Ahmad Khan with seven more candidates from this seat.
