Stephens wins her maiden U.S. Open title

Sloane Stephens is the winner of the U.S. Open Women’ title 2018. No one including Stephens herself would have expected the turn around in the future at the beginning of the tournament which saw all the big names except Venus Williams participate in the prestigious grand slam tournament.

“It’s incredible. I honestly had surgery January 23 and if someone had told me I would win the US Open I would have said it’s impossible,” said Stephens.

Stephens will pocket a record $3.7 million pay has underwent foot surgery in February and made her competitive comeback at Wimbledon. This was the biggest win in her career and never had any trouble dethroning the 22nd seed Madison Keys with an impressive score of 6-3, 6-0.

In the other finals, Switzerland’s Martina Hingis and Britain’s Jamie Murray fought off a match point to defeat Hao-Ching Chan and Michael Venus 6-1, 4-6 (10-8) to claim the US Open mixed doubles title. Jamie Murray who is the brother of former World No.1 Andy Murray made the dream of Hingis possible who had won her last U. Open some 20 years ago.

“He’s a great partner to have. His wingspan as you saw at the end,” Hingis said. Today, the men’s finals will take place where Rafael Nadal would be playing against Jamie Anderson for the title. Nadal leads 4-0 till date.
