London, July 22 (IANS) Chelsea head coach Antonio Conte said that Spain striker Alvaro Morata will be the first choice to lead their attack after he joined the capital football club from European football champions Real Madrid on a five-year deal.
“Chelsea Football Club is delighted to announce Alvaro Morata has completed his move from Real Madrid on a five-year-deal,” the club confirmed on Friday.
The English champions have reportedly signed the 24-year-old striker for 60 million pounds ($78 million).
Morata scored 20 goals last season after rejoining Real from Italian champions Juventus. He has also won the Champions League, La Liga and Champions League twice each with the club.
Chelsea head coach Antonio Conte clarified that Morata will be the first choice striker for the club ahead of fiesty Diego Costa, who will exit the club, possibly on a loan deal.
“It is very important, the choice. Morata, for sure, is our first choice, he is a good player, the right prospect for Chelsea and hopes to show his value with us,” Conte said.
Commenting on joining the EPL reigning champions Morata said in a statement: “I am so happy to be here. It’s an incredible emotion to be part of this big club. I am looking to work hard, score as many goals as I can and to win as many trophies as possible.”
The club’s technical director Michael Emenalo also shared his view on signing the striker and said: “We are delighted to complete Alvaro’s signing and welcome him to the club. We believe he can make a great impact for Chelsea and look forward to seeing him in action.”
“Alvaro has proven class at the highest level and his quality will be a huge asset to Antonio and the squad.”
Morata also won the Serie A title and Copa Italia title twice each with his former club Juventus.
