Supreme Court says Aadhaar Card cannot be Compulsory for Government’s Welfare Schemes

Today Supreme Court said that Aadhaar Card cannot be compulsory for Government welfare schemes. Same time court said that government can link 12-digit identification number of Adhaar Card for filing of tax return or opening bank accounts.

In recent past government said it is compulsory for people to give 12-digit Aadhaar number for getting benefits of about 36 central schemes that includes free mid-day meals for schoolchildren.


Top Court said Aadhaar cannot be compulsory document for Citizens to avail benefits of official welfare schemes.

In assembly, Arun Jaitley said that Aadhaar Card may quickly become the one card needed to recognize a person that will replace Voter IDs and Permanent Account Number. Mr. Jaitley said about 98 per cent of citizens do have Aadhaar card number.
