Yesterday Supreme Court said that court will choose if Aadhaar card needs to be made compulsory to file Income Tax returns. The top court has questioned the government to validate the necessity for making Aadhaar card compulsory for filing Income Tax returns from 1st May.
According to the reports, Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi said that it was observed that PAN cards are being used to distract funds to cover firms and to prevent such practice Government has got one option that is to make Aadhaar card compulsory. He answered when the court asked Centre that how Aadhaar can be made compulsory when only passed order to make it optional.
In March month Arun Jaitley told that government has made Aadhaar compulsory to retain PAN, the step was taken in view of linking PAN cards with Aadhaar , which will be able to recognize those who evaded taxes by having multiple duplicate PAN. The Top Court has said that Aadhaar card cannot be compulsory to get the benefit of government’s schemes, it can be an option.
