A bolt from the blue awaited the sporting community yesterday, as at a meeting of the Indian Olympic Association, tainted former Congress MP Suresh Kalmadi and Haryana politician Abhay Chautala, were appointed as life Presidents of the Indian Olympic Association. This has come as a complete shock for Indian citizens and the international sporting community as both the politicians have major cases of corruption lodged against them and have brought a lot of disrepute to India due to their actions.
Suresh Kalmadi, a former Congress Member of Parliament from Pune was jailed in April 2011 for a period of 10 months in connection to the corruption filed charges against him for his role in 2010 Common Wealth Games (CWG). Mr. Kalmadi was suspended from the Congress, but was released from prison in January 2012.
Mr. Abhay Singh Chautala is the current leader of opposition in the Harayan State Assembly and comes from a prestigious Haryanvi family that has been active in politics for many decades. He is the son of former Chief Minister of Haryana Om Prakash Chautala and is the grandson of former Chief Minister of Haryana Chaudhary Devi Lal. He is a senior politician of the Indian National Lok Dal.Mr. Chautala was appointed as the President of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) in the year 2012, and faced the humiliating ignominy of getting the IOA derecognized by the International Olympic Council (IOC). The IOC did this as the IOA fielded a candidate, Mr. Chautala, who was chargesheeted in many cases of corruption. This led to his ouster from the IOA.
The decision was taken by at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the IOA. Current IOA President N Ramchandran, said that the a member in the AGM proposed their names and it was unanimously accepted by all the members of the IOA. He said that he did not have the power to go against this decision.
Union Sports Minister Vijay Goel, said that it was a serious issue and that he was shocked. He said that this was unacceptable and that he will look into this matter.
