Sweden drops rape investigation of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange

Prosecutors in Sweden today dropped their investigation into the alleged rape case against WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. Top prosecutor Marianne Ny said that the investigations and the arrest warrant are being dropped since it has become impossible to serve a legal notice to Assange. It may be recalled that Assange has been living in the Ecuadorean Embassy in London for the past five years. He sought refuge in the embassy after a rape inquiry was started against him by authorities in Stockholm. Assange does not want to go to Sweden since he fears that he would eventually be extradited to the United States, where he is wanted for disclosing highly classified government information.

However, Assange is still not a free man, since he can be prosecuted anytime till 2020 if he chooses to return to Sweden. This time limit has been determined as per the statute of limitations. Assange is also not a free man in UK, since he is wanted in the UK for disobeying a court order. This is a lesser charge, but London police said that they will surely arrest him if he decided to leave the country. “Now that the situation has changed and the Swedish authorities have discontinued their investigation into that matter, Mr. Assange remains wanted for a much less serious offense,” the police said in a statement.
