After the recent verdict by Supreme Court by asking all the liquor shops on the National Highways and State Highways to be shut down, it also paved way for shutting down shops on some of the main areas/roads within the city. This included Anna Salai which is an extension of NH45, ECR, OMR, Poonamalee High Rd and 100 feet road which resulted in nearly 100 bars shutting its shop.
These bars in star hotels lost anywehere between Rs.2-4 lakhs a day. With 30 Tasmac outlets shut in Central Chennai, it was 10 in North Chennai and 28 in South Chennai.
Following the hue and cry from the establishments, the Govt of Tamilnadu has decided to denotify these roads so that they can continue selling liquor which is one of the main revenue source for the Government. he downgrade of highways will be done from the city until Chengalpet.
