After extending the income tax filing deadline from July 31 to August 5, the government has announced that income tax offices across the country will remain open till midnight tomorrow to ensure that everyone is able to file their income tax returns within the deadline. The government wants maximum number of people to file their income tax returns and since tomorrow August 5 is the last date, income tax offices will remain open till midnight tomorrow. The extended office time for August 5, the last date, has been provided keeping in mind the needs of senior citizens and people who have income of less than Rs 5 lakh.
The finance ministry has issued a notification regarding the extended timings for filing income tax returns on August 5. An excerpt from the notification reads, “In order to facilitate manual filing of returns on August 5, 2017, being a Saturday, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has directed that necessary arrangements be made for receiving Income Tax Returns up to midnight in all Income Tax Offices throughout the country.” It may be recalled that e-filing of ITR is mandatory for all individuals excluding only people whose income is less than Rs 5 lakh per annum and those who are above 80 years of age.
