The Enforcement Directorate (ED) had recently attached various properties of Zakir Naik’s Islamic Research Foundation (IRF), which were valued at Rs 18.37 crore. Now, the agency is planning to tighten the noose even further by arresting Zakir Naik. It has filed an application with a special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court, requesting a non-bailable warrant to be issued against Zakir Naik. The court has admitted the application and will be hearing the arguments next week.
It may be recalled that Naik has been non-cooperative since the time the case was registered against him. Repeated summons have been issued to him, asking him to appear before the Enforcement Directorate, but he has ignored each of these summons. Naik had offered to hold discussions over video conferencing, but the request was denied by ED, saying that it will set a wrong precedent. ED maintains that Naik’s presence is required for answering some very critical questions; hence his arrest had become unavoidable.
