This has been a rising concern among the parents of young girls about the early outbreak of their daughter’s menstrual cycle. This problem is actually hitting most of the girl’s in the country and has several contributory reasons for it. While, the starting of one’s periods is a natural process, it can be very confusing for a girl.
It also found that a woman’s age of starting of periods is linked with that of her maternal family, including her mother, elder sisters, grandmother or aunts. The onset of a daughter’s periods has a direct co-relation to that of her mother’s. If the mother’s periods began around the age of 13, it is presumed that the daughter will also have onset during a similar period.
“But that still leaves a major part of these contrasting changes due to degraded environment and lifestyle factors which do a have control over our bodies” Dr.
Rita Bakshi added.
Imbalanced secretion in the Thyroid Glands can lead to Hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism in young girls can trigger as an unusually early start of periods, even before the age of 10. This early puberty is known as Precocious Puberty which has been taking over these young girls like a storm.
This is draining and fretting as the youth of our country is towards a decline. A healthier youth is a brighter future. The parents must take immediate action to shield their children from exposure to adversities.
“The children must have a proper and balanced diet and must include fresh and green vegetables. The parents must keep a check on their children and must avoid adulterated milk and dairy products. Healthy food lays a foundation for a healthy body and a fresh mind. Storage of food must take place in glass containers instead of plastic ones. Children must indulge themselves in some physical activities like a brisk walk, yoga or sports” further Dr. Rita Bakshi added.
The main reason why girls have early periods is because the body lacks the right balance of hormones. Therefore, it always insisted that the hormone balance is very vital in a women’s body. The hormones in her body that initiate puberty have been produced earlier; this is why there is an early onset of periods among girls.
The very sad part about periods is the fact that during 1990’s the average age at which the periods would start was about 15 years. But with the changing lifestyles, behaviours and habits, it has led to the arrival of periods as early as 8 years. This decline in the age levels is more prevalent in the urban areas inspite of all the amenities.
In the majority of cases, there is no obvious reason for why the body has started producing these hormones early. It is affected by various reasons like thyroid, blood sugar levels, Body Mass Index or even hereditary.
Early puberty has a lot of mental and physical restlessness related to it as young girls are not mature enough to manage the changes and emotions. Girls, who encounter periods at an early age, often find it very difficult and strenuous to deal with the changes their body encounters.
Body Mass Index (BMI)
It is often seen that the girls have an early onset of periods have a higher Body Mass Index (BMI). It is suggested that BMI should not be very high nor too low. According to the researchers, it is proven that obese girls get their first period months earlier than those who have normal Body Mass Index. Thus, overweight girls are more exposed to have periods at an earlier age.
“Today’s girls are hitting puberty early due to multiple factors like degraded environment, unhealthy eating habits and unbalanced sleep cycles. This leads to accumulation of fat in the body. The fat cells in our body develop leptin. The more fat we have, the more leptin exists in our body. The higher the leptin levels, the higher are the chances for the onset of puberty. Thus, Girls who have high leptin levels are prone to early puberty” added Dr. Rita Bakshi, Founder and Gynaecologist and IVF Expert, International Fertility Centre.
