It might seem impossible that a pit can be worth more than Rs 1 lakh crore, but it’s true. This pit is located in East Siberia inside Mir mine, which is most widely known as Diamond City. According to estimates, this pit is worth more than Rs 1 lakh crore. This pit is considered as one of the most dangerous in the world. After the year 2004, the company managing the mine has constructed underground tunnels to mine the diamonds. The average diamond production from this mine is nearly 2 lakh carat every year. In 2014, the diamond production from the mine’s underground tunnels was 6 million carat, which was worth 20 million pounds.
There are other mines too in the area, which together contribute nearly 23 percent of the world’s total production of rough diamonds. The largest diamonds mined here are as large as the size of a golf ball, which are hugely expensive. The Mir mine is owned by Russian mining company Alrosa. The mine is 1722 ft. deep and has a circumference of 3.5 km. It is said that Russian President Vladimir Putin personally keeps track of this mine. The mine is considered extremely dangerous, as there are huge risks associated with cave-ins and its steep gradient.
