In a setback to Trinamool Congress (TMC) and a significant gain to BJP, senior TMC leader Mukul Roy has formally joined BJP. Roy was considered the number 2 in TMC, next only to TMC chief Mamata Banerjee, and his joining BJP might change the political equations in West Bengal. Sources had earlier revealed that differences had developed between Mamata and Roy due to which Roy had quit TMC. It was being speculated that he will join BJP and now that has come true. BJP has been trying to increase its presence in West Bengal, but it did not have any significant success. It remains to be seen whether Roy can bring about some changes that will help BJP emerge stronger in West Bengal. Since the time Mamata Banerjee took power in West Bengal, she has emerged as a strong leader and it has become difficult for opposition parties to challenge her.
Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad today formally announced the induction of Mukul Roy into BJP. Speaking during a press conference, Prasad said that Roy’s experience will boost the party’s presence in West Bengal. Roy also expressed his delight to be a part of BJP and said that he was privileged to work with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Roy had earlier said that he had resigned from TMC because he was not happy with the way things were being conducted in TMC. He had said that members in any party need to be treated as comrades and not as servants.
