TMC senior leader Mukul Roy quits party; may join BJP

In a setback to Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC), one of its founder members Mukul Roy has resigned from the party. Roy said that he will soon surrender his membership of the party and resign from the Rajya Sabha. Roy was one of the pillars of TMC and his resignation from the party will certainly have implications for TMC. In the past few weeks, Rao had been meeting various BJP leaders in Delhi. It had created the perception that he may be planning to switch over to BJP. Now, with this resignation from TMC, it has brought him one step closer to joining the BJP. However, Roy has not yet officially announced what he will be doing next. Roy said that he was forced to resign and he is leaving TMC with a heavy heart.

Roy said that he is experiencing quite a lot of pain while leaving TMC, as he has dedicated a significant percentage of his life and political career to nurture the party. He said that he will provide more details after the Durga pooja celebrations are over on September 30. He said that till the pooja is over, he will not share his plans with anyone. It appears that Roy just wants to relax a bit and take his time to think about the right move. BJP’s Bengal unit chief Dilip Ghosh said that Roy had been in touch with the party’s leaders. He said that they will think about it if Roy wants to join BJP. Sources said that differences have developed between Mamata Banerjee and Roy since Mamata has started giving prominence to her nephew Abhishek Banerjee.
