The Indian armed forces registered yet another success in their fight against terrorism when a top Hizbul Mujahideen militant was killed in encounter. The killed militant has been identified as Yaseen Itoo, who was said to be close to Burhan Wani, another terrorist who was killed last year by security forces. The operation against the terrorists continued for around 20 hours. During the operations, 2 Army jawans were martyred and 3 jawans were injured. One of the injured is an officer in the Indian Army. After the terrorist Itoo was killed, the Jammu and Kashmir police said that he was the longest surviving local terrorist in Kashmir. This means that Hizbul Mujahideen has suffered a major blow after Itoo alias Mehmood Gaznavi has been eliminated by security forces.
The operation began after security forces received inputs that terrorists are present in Awneera village of Zainapora area of the district. The area was cordoned off and a search operation was launched. When the security forces were trying to comb the area, the terrorists opened fire and attacked the security forces. The security forces also opened fire in response and a gun battle ensued. The two army jawans who were killed in the operation are Sepoy Ilayaraja P and Sepoy Gawai Sumedh Waman. Ilayaraja comes from Kandani village in Tamil Nadu whereas Waman was from Lonagra village in Maharashtra.
