Newspatrolling: The Army has registered yet another major strike against terrorism in Kashmir, after it killed top Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) commander Junaid Mattoo and his close associate today. The top LeT militant and his close associate were killed in Arwani area of Jammu and Kashmir’s southern Anantnag district. Mattoo was a dreaded terrorist and for the last few years, he was very active in areas such as southern districts of Kulgam, Anantnag, Shopian and Pulwama. He has been involved in various terror attacks in Kashmir. He had a reward of Rs 10 lakh on his head.
Security forces in the Kashmir valley responded after they received information that militants were present in Idgah Mohalla of Arwanu. Thereafter, a massive search operation was launched jointly by the Army’s 1 Rashtriya Rifles, the J&K Police’s counterinsurgency Special Operations Group (SOG) and the 90th Battalion of the CRPF. The militants were soon traced to their hideout and security forces quickly surrounded it, thereby trapping Mattoo and his accomplice. The militants were hiding in two houses. The Army then used Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) to blow up the houses. Soon after, both houses caught fire and the militants are said to have died in the fire.
