In a move that will improve transparency and make it easier for consumers to choose the most appropriate plan, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) will soon be hosting the tariff plans of all telecom companies on its website. TRAI Chairman RS Sharma made the announcement today and he said that the move will improve transparency over rates. TRAI said that the move will also help in making tariff-comparison apps and products, similar to the trend that can be seen in case of airlines and hotels. The telecom regulator has recently asked all telecom companies to file their tariffs in electronic form. TRAI has plans to do away with the process of physical filing of tariffs.
Estimates suggest that around 24,000 rates are filed by telecom companies every year. This Includes tariff plans being offered by all telecom companies, as applicable in various telecom circles in the country. It also includes the special tariff vouchers. “We will not only have transparent tariff display on the TRAI site, we will also probably enable machine-readable data which can be exported, so people can build applications on top of it. We will provide APIs,” Sharma said. On the question about when these projects will be launched, Sharma said that the basic framework has been prepared and the services will be launched pretty soon.
