Emergency crews reached the Atlantic terminal when the Long Island Rail Road train got derailed even though it was travelling at a very low speed. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has said that the locomotive engineer was responsible for not stopping the train and that is what caused the accident. The MTA believed that the train was travelling at a speed of 10 to 15 miles per hour and the engineer should have been able to stop the train.
There were no other major service disruptions on the Long Island Rail Road line system. The US Federal Railroad Administration (USFRA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) would be sending investigators to the scene.
The Long Island Rail Road line system is the busiest railway system in the US and serves over 3,30,000 passengers everyday. The Atlantic terminal is the busiest train station in New York as it connects citizens to nine subway lines.
