In a significant development that is being considered regressive, US President Donald Trump today announced that he will not allow transgender people to serve in US military. He said that transgender people will not serve in any capacity in the US army. Trump posted several tweets related to his latest decision, one of which read, “After consultation with my Generals and military experts, please be advised that the United States Government will not accept or allow transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the U.S. Military.” In another tweet, he said, “Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail.”
Political experts said that this is another attempt by Trump administration to revoke the decisions taken by the earlier Democratic government under Barack Obama. It may be recalled that the approval for allowing transgender persons to work in US military was provided by Pentagon during Obama’s rule last year. Transgender people were expected to start enlisting in US military from this year, but now Trump has revoked the earlier decision. Last month also, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis had already signed an order which effectively delayed the recruitment of transgender people in US army for 6 months. Transgender groups are currently in a state of shock and several of them have started evaluating legal options to challenge the ban imposed by Trump.
