Enis Berberoglu, the Turkish opposition leader belonging to Republican People’s Party (CHP) was sentenced to jail for 25 years on spying charges by the Erdogan led Government. Erdogan who came back into Power giving the President more power than others by winning a controversial referendum is again in the news.
This is the first time ever, an opposition is leader has been jailed. Though he was not detained during the trial, the arrest was effected as soon as the verdict was announced by the Istanbul Criminal Court. He was accused of providing the newspaper Cumhuriyet with video evidence of Turkish intelligence agencies transporting weapons and ammunition to Syria in 2014.
It is to be noted here that the immunity of MP’s were repealed in Turkey only last year. Berberoğlu, who was accused of providing the video to Cumhuriyet, is the latest person associated with the story to be put behind bars.Erdoğan said the trucks were delivering military supplies to Turkish soldiers and came under the criticism that the arrest is due to redeeming his political vendetta.
The party in opposition has been founded by the Turkey’s first president Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.
