After two people were allegedly killed during police firing, angry mobs demanding separate Gorkhaland went on a rampage. The protestors vandalized a Trinamool Congress (TMC) office and set it afire. A police vehicle was also burnt by the angry protestors. The mob also attacked a World Heritage Site in Darjeeling. Looking into the gravity of the situation, the state government has now called the army. It may be recalled that the army was withdrawn a week earlier by the state government. Police stations in the area have stopped talking to media, but state government claims that there has not been any incidence of firing.
The claim of two people killed in police firing has been made by the Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM), which is leading the statehood movement. According to GJM, one person was killed in Darjeeling whereas the second one was shot dead at Sonada on Friday. The fresh violence in Darjeeling has created new challenges for the state government, as it is already battling communal violence in Basirhat. It is alleged that the state government is favoring Muslims in Basirhat, which is being protested by opposition political parties.
