Ahead of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections in Mumbai, Uddhav Thackeray attacked PM Modi, saying that he has his ‘kundli’ (horoscope). Thackeray was reacting to PM Modi’s warning to Congress to “behave”. Thackeray said that PM Modi should not forget that everyone who is born has a kundli and he has both Modi’s and Amit Shah’s kundli. Thackeray further accused the BJP’s top two leaders, saying that the party was trying to expand base in Maharashtra, especially in Mumbai.
It may be noted that Shiv Sena is still an alliance partner in the NDA at the center. However, BJP’s demand for majority share of tickets in BMC civic polls has not gone down well with the Shiv Sena. Earlier, Thackeray had announced that it is severing all ties with BJP in the Mumbai civic polls. In 2014 assembly elections in Maharashtra, Shiv Sena had fought alone, but had supported BJP after the elections.
Shiv Sena has ruled the BMC elections for 20 years and it wants to continue its rule. The BMC elections are critical since the municipal body commands a budget of a staggering Rs 37,000 crore. For all these years, Shiv Sena had forged political partnerships, but this time, it has announced that it will contest the BMC elections on its own. The results of BMC elections will have implications for the current BJP government in Maharashtra and the NDA government at the center.
