Union Minister of State for Social Justice, Vijay Sampla, who is also the Chief of the Punjab Bhartiya Janata Party, has offered to quit as the Union Minister and as Chief of the Punjab BJP as he is unhappy over ticket distribution in Punjab. He is upset particularly about Mr. Som Prakash getting a ticket to contest from the constituency of Phagwara.
Mr. Sampla wanted a person of his choice to contest from Phagwara. The BJP is in alliance with the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) in the state of Punjab and at the Centre. Out of the 117 seats in Punjab, the BJP will be contesting on 23 seats. Two sitting MLAs who are currently Ministers in the Prakash Singh Badal led Punjab Government have been dropped from the list of 23 candidates who will be contesting the polls.
The last date for filing nominations is January 18th 2017. The SAD – BJP combine is facing double anti-incumbency and the fight for power is seen to be between the Amarinder Singh led Congress and the Arvind Kejriwal led Aam Admi Party (AAP).
