Rape-accused UP Cabinet Minister Gayatri Prajapati has supposedly gone underground, after police sought his arrest based on directions given by the Supreme Court. Prajapati is considered to be a loyalist of Mulayam Singh Yadav. Prajapati was sacked by Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, but he was later reinstated. The rape survivor has given her statement to investigators, saying that Prajapati and his people had gang-raped her. She has also accused these men of molesting and trying to rape her 17-year daughter.
As per law, this will attract charges under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act and the IPC. The minor girl is currently receiving treatment at AIIMS hospital in New Delhi and once she records her statement, Prajapati can be arrested.
The reinstatement of Prajapati puts a question mark on the cleanup efforts undertaken by Akhilesh Yadav. There are still two phases of UP assembly polls left, and such incidences may show the Samajwadi Party (SP) in a bad light.
The police have searched Prajapati’s residence in Amethi and Lucknow, but he was nowhere to be found. The police are simultaneously collecting evidence, as they have to submit a report to the Supreme Court by April 7.
