Asrar Jamayee, 80 , an eminent Urdu poet was declared dead by the social welfare department of south Delhi in 2013 depriving him of his monthly pension of Rs.1500.
Since then he has been fighting for survival. He lives alone in a rented single room with Urdu books around and worn-out shervanis.
He has devoted his life to Urdu and published four books of poetry and Indian history.
When he was young he received an award from first Indian president Dr.Rajendra Prasad.
Since 2013, he has asked successive delhi government under Sheila Dikshit and Arvind Kejriwal for help but to no avail.
When he approached Social welfare department to prove that he qualified for old age pension the officers became belligerent.
“I told them, ‘I am standing in front of you, what could be greater proof [that I am alive]?” he said. “The official replied that he knew that I was alive, but he couldn’t help me because the records insisted I was dead.”
Deputy CM Manish Sisodia tweeted ” Have asked Rajendra Gautam ji , Minister social welfare and Urdu academy , to meet Asrar sahib and do the needful with in 48 hrs”.
When contacted Gautam said “I cannot immediately confirm if the facts stated are true but I have directed the concerned officials to urgently take necessary action. At times, names are struck off from lists of beneficiaries if people don’t submit living certificates, which is to be done annually,” he said.
