The US has identified China and North Korea as a risk to peace and security in the Asia Pacific region and said that at present, the most pressing challenge was North Korea. It may be recalled that North Korea appears to have gone completely berserk in recent times, threatening to attack United States and its allies with nuclear weapons. Speaking about the emerging situation in Asia Pacific, Commander of the US Pacific Command or PACOM Admiral Harry Harris said, “The biggest challenge is an aggressive and assertive China. But the most immediate challenge today is and remains North Korea.” Harris added that terrorist organization ISIS is another major challenge for the United States and the entire world. He said that the kind of violent terrorism perpetrated by ISIS has never been witnessed before and it needs to be stopped as soon as possible.
Harris also talked about the India-US relations and said that the two countries are increasing trade and military ties. He said that defense deals between the two countries have crossed $15 billion and more is expected in the coming years, as India looks to strengthen its military infrastructure. Harris said that India has already been designated as a major defense partner of the United States. He said that the US is willing to help India modernize its military. Harris said that India is now seen as an equal to some of the other major allies of the United States.
