Vishnu Vardhan won his second Challenger level title of the season with Japanese partner Toshihide Matsui. The duo has bettered Russia’s Evgeny Karlovskiy and Evgeny Tyurnev in t tightly contested finals in the President’s cup which took place in Astana, Kazakhstan. The final scores read as 7-6(3), 6-7(5), 10-7
This is the biggest title win for Vardhan in his illustrious tennis career. Vardhan who is ranked at 179 in the World had won Fergana title in July with Sriram Balaji.
“It has been an incredible week, it is the biggest title so far of my career after a bad injury lay-off in 2013 and 2014. I am really happy to be back at this level,” Vardhan said. He further added “Last week, me and Matsui lost in the first round of an ITF event, having six match points. But we kept our head high and worked together for a fortnight.”
“Ashutosh helped me, taking his time out and pushing me when I was in Delhi in between my tournaments which kept me motivated,” he said an also had given credits to Hyderabad-based coach CV Nagraj and trainer Latheef who have shaped his career.
On the other hand, Paes and his partner Sam Groth lost in the semi-finals of ATP 250 Hall of Fame Open in Newport (USA),after they were handed a defeat by Pakistan’s Aisam-ul-haq Qureshi and America’s Rajeev Ram who scored better over the former with 6-4, 6-7(6), 9-11 to win the game.
