As was being expected, NDA’s candidate Venkaiah Naidu has won the elections for the post of Vice-President. It may be recalled that the opposition parties had fielded Gopalkrishna Gandhi against Naidu, but he failed to generate any surprises. Gopalkrishna Gandhi is the grandson of Mahatma Gandhi and he had also served as the Governor of West Bengal. With Naidu being elected to the post of vice-president, NDA will now have full control over the decisions it takes. Earlier, the NDA had already achieved the success of getting its Presidential candidate Ram Nath Kovind elected as the President of India. Kovind had won comfortably against the opposition’s candidate Meira Kumar.
In the vice-presidential elections held today, Naidu got 516 votes whereas his rival Gopalkrishna Gandhi got only 244 votes. This clearly shows that NDA has an edge over the opposition. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was quick to congratulate Naidu on his win. In a tweet, PM Modi said, “My mind is filled with memories of working with @MVenkaiahNaidu Garu, in the Party & Government. Will cherish this aspect of our association”. For Naidu, it’s been a long journey; starting from being a student leader to now becoming the vice-president of India. It’s been a journey of more than 4 decades and now he will become the 15th vice-president of India.
